Emergence - Gravure by Adabel Allen at New Grounds Print Workshop and Gallery

October 7, 2011 to October 29, 2011
Always the innovator in combining print media, Adabel Allen expertly merges drawn and photographic imagery to create an otherworldly and almost magical quality for her softly hued gravure prints. While birds have always been the main subject matter in her work, she now views them as storytellers, our close emissaries of the natural world, and as characters with quirks and behaviors that parallel our own. This body of work is full of personal insights, boundless imagination and an inspiration to…See More

All about us

New Grounds Print Workshop & Gallery is just that-- a print workshop and a gallery. We're not an artists co-op but a privately owned, for-profit business with a professional staff. Our workshop is mainly utilized by our member artists, who sign a year contract and pay monthly. For well under $200 a month, they are given unlimited access to 6 handmade Takach presses situated in two large studios with expansive stainless steel workspaces, all the ink they can use, and paper and other supplies sold on the premises at discounted prices.

The members form a community, with groups of printmakers often meeting on the same days to work side by side, discuss their work, and learn tricks and techniques from each other. Our artists range from the early career stage, to some who have been making prints and other art for decades; from people in their twenties to people in their seventies.

In addition to the benefits of the Workshop and its staff, members are shown in and promoted by the New Grounds Gallery. The entire Workshop functions as a gallery, with every conceivable wall hung with the art being made by the members. In addition, there is a devoted gallery space at the front door, which hosts 10 solo shows and 2 group shows a year. The public is welcome to tour and browse the entire space — so long as they stay out of the artists’ hair; they are, after all, busy making art! Tours of the expansive space are always available from the sales staff at a moments’ notice, and are encouraged, so that a new visitor doesn’t miss any of the wonderful works hung on our walls.

New Grounds is a completely non-toxic printmaking environment, utilizing new materials and techniques. Instead of breathing noxious fumes and vaporized metals, our artists (and patrons) need only contend with non-reactive acrylic materials. Almost all of our artists are using waterbased inks, which are cleaned with simple soap and water. Those using oil based inks clean up with baby oil and rubbing alcohol, not solvents. We also offer classes in a wide variety of printmaking techniques, from the introductory to the highly advanced. All of our classes also utilize non-toxic techniques and materials, and are taught by lifelong, practicing, professional artists.

Come to New Grounds for an afternoon, see what active artists right here in Albuquerque are making with their own two hands. Sign up for a class or even a membership! Support your local art scene and its (proudly) struggling members.

Artists of Dialectical Fusion - Serigraphs from India

This is a first time exhibition of five different artists from India who have perfected the art of serigraphy, or screen printing. From softly hued abstract scenes to contemporary images of trains and traditional imagery, this show is full of surprises. Screen printing, made popular by Andy Warhol in the 1960s, is a printing technique that uses a woven mesh to support an ink-blocking stencil. The attached stencil forms open areas of mesh that transfer ink or other printable materials which…

Jessica Weybright’s gravure seduces with soft colors and haunting images

Jessica Weybright definitely surpassed herself in this third solo exhibition at New Grounds. Her new semi-abstract images are an interesting mixture of graveyard sculptures and floral imagery. The tight cropping, inventive juxtapositions, and unexpected color choices transform what could have been a very…

Hi New Grounds (perhaps you could give us a real name to work with...), a suggestion: post your workshop announcement on the Events calendar. That way people will continue to see it after it's no longer featured. P.S. Your Print Universe page looks very attractive, lots of nice content.

Welcome aboard Print Universe, New Grounds. Delighted to see how quickly you got up and running! Please tell us more, about yourself, about the studio (the old building looks interesting...) Oh, and what's an "Amphibiological Vapor?"
